'Min' Leibrook

1903 - June 8, 1943

Nicknamed 'Min' after a cartoon character. Started cornet, switched to bass sax and tuba. Played tuba in the Ten Foot Band in Chicago, subsequently joined The Wolverines. Left early in 1925 to join band led by pianist Arnold Johnson. To New York, worked for Paul Whiteman from 1927 until 1931, except for brief spell early in 1930. (During this period did free-lance recordings including sessions on bass sax with Bix Beiderbecke.) Worked with pianist Eddie Duchin (1935), with Lennie Hayton Orchestra on bass sax and string bass; after playing in short-lived Three T's Band (Jack and Charlie Teagarden, Frankie Trumbauer, December 1936) moved to West Coast with Eddie Duchin. Several years of studio and theatre work on string bass; with Manny Strand's Orchestra at Earl Carroll Theatre, Los Angeles, until shortly before his death.
