Benjamin Himpel

Originally from Berlin, Germany, Benjamin started playing the saxophone when he was 14 years old. First he was trained classically, but later he privately studied saxophone and jazz with Wolfgang Kogler, David Baker, Mack Goldsbury, Mike Lee, Uli Lenz, Gebhard Ullmann, Mike Zilber, Steve Coleman among others. He writes and arranges music, and has played in several groups over the past years including the Berlin Youth Jazz Orchestra, the IU Big Bands, lead his own quartet and founded the Saxophone Cartel. The Saxophone Cartel released their first CD "Caught in the Act" in July 2005.

From 1998 until 2004 he lived in Bloomington, IN, where he earned his PhD in Mathematics and works in a postdoctoral position at the University of Bonn, Germany, after having completed a one-year research fellowship at the Max-Planck-Institute. Here he still plays and teaches the saxophone.
