Played with local bands before moving to New York in 1935. With Adrian Rollini at Adrian's Tap Room (1936), also worked with Red McKenzie and Wingy Manone at The Famous Door. With Bunny Berigan in spring 1937, brief trip to Europe, then with Jack Jenney's Studio Band and Artie Shaw before working for Paul Whiteman from spring 1938 (regularly featured with Whiteman's Swing Wing). Studio musician from the early 1940's, 25 years with C.B.S. radio and television. Prolific recording career including sessions with Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, etc., etc. (from Who's Who of Jazz Storyville to Swing Street - by John Chilton)
